A CleanMyMac alternative that explains every file, with no subscription
CleanMyMac, by MacPaw, is the best-known Mac cleaner: more than 25 tools for cleaning, speed, malware and apps. SiftMac does one of those jobs, freeing disk space, and is built around one question for every item it finds: does it come back?
- Choose CleanMyMac if you want one app that also scans for malware, runs maintenance and speed-up tasks, and tidies cloud storage, and you’re happy with a subscription.
- Choose SiftMac if what you need is space back, you want to see what every item is and whether it comes back before anything moves, and you’d rather pay once.
Side by side
CleanMyMac’s details are from cleanmymac.com and MacPaw’s store, checked on 25 October 2026. Prices there depend on your country, plan and number of Macs.

What SiftMac is built around
These are the things SiftMac does on every scan. For CleanMyMac, see its own site; we only list here what we can show for our app.
- A verdict and a reason for every item. Safe, Rebuilds or You decide, with the reason in plain words: “Files apps keep so they open faster. Apps make fresh ones as needed.” You see that before anything moves.
- A way back. Caches go straight away because they rebuild. Downloads, apps, duplicates, iPhone backups and the Trash wait on the Undo Shelf for 7 days (or 14 or 30), and Put back returns each one to exactly where it was.
- Never what you’re using. Anything an open app or running program is using is left alone, and checked again right before cleaning.
- Honest numbers. SiftMac counts only the space removing an item really frees, so APFS clones and hard links aren’t counted twice.
- Developer and AI files.
node_modulesand Python environments in stale projects, Xcode DerivedData and simulators, Docker if you opt in, old Claude Code, Codex and Cursor chats, and Ollama and Hugging Face models, each named with the project or model it belongs to. - System Data, explained. Snapshots, purgeable space, macOS installers, iPhone backups and Docker’s disk, each named and sized.
- Nothing leaves your Mac. No account, and the app sends no usage data.

Why people look for an alternative
If you’re here, it’s probably one of three things:
- The subscription. Freeing space is something most people need a few times a year. SiftMac is one payment, with free updates.
- Not knowing what went. A big “clean” button is quick, but it’s hard to trust with a disk full of work. SiftMac shows each item, what it is, and whether it comes back.
- More app than you need. If you only want space back, a tool that does just that is easier to live with.
And when CleanMyMac is the better fit: if you want malware scanning, maintenance scripts and cloud cleanup in one place, it does all of those, and SiftMac doesn’t try to.
Other CleanMyMac alternatives worth knowing
- DaisyDisk ($9.99 once, Mac App Store, macOS 12 or later): a map of what’s using your disk, so you find the big folders fast and decide what each is yourself.
- Mole ($19 once, macOS 14 or later): cleans caches and AI tool data, uninstalls and updates apps, and comes with a free, open-source command-line version.
- Pearcleaner (free, open source, macOS 13 or later) and AppCleaner (free): uninstallers that also remove the files an app leaves behind.
- OnyX (free): maintenance and settings for people comfortable with what each option does.
- macOS itself: System Settings › General › Storage has recommendations, such as emptying the Trash automatically, and lets you review big files, apps and iPhone backups.
Questions
Can I use SiftMac if I already have CleanMyMac?
Yes. They don’t get in each other’s way. If you move over, cancel the subscription where you bought it: your MacPaw account, or under Subscriptions in the App Store’s Account Settings if you subscribed through the Mac App Store.
Does SiftMac remove malware?
No. macOS has malware protection built in (XProtect), and SiftMac sticks to freeing space.
Is SiftMac safe?
Every item gets a verdict before anything moves, anything in use is skipped, and what can’t rebuild waits 7 days on the Undo Shelf. One thing to know today: SiftMac isn’t notarized by Apple yet, so the first time you open it, macOS asks you to confirm once. How to open it
Try it on your own Mac. Scan and review everything for free; your first 2 GB of cleaning is free too. Then it’s $12 once for the first 100 buyers, for 2 Macs, with a 14-day refund.
